Andy Gray critical about Cenk Tosun after Everton’s first league defeat of the season
Team:
Former Everton star Andy Gray was not pleased with the showing of Cenk Tosun who was guilty of missing a number of goalscoring opportunities during the weekend loss to West Ham United. The Toffees had made an unbeaten start to the campaign with three draws and one win from their opening four matches but they could not sustain the streak against the Hammers, who beat them by a 3-1 scoreline.
Following the game, Gray was particularly critical about Tosun, who has failed to open his goal tally since the start of the season. The Turkey international has indeed contributed a couple of assists in the five league games to date but Gray was still not been impressed by the striker, who he reckons should only be a squad player.
“I don’t think I ever thought he was the real deal,” he told beIN Sports. “I thought he might be a decent player. He’s not shown anything right now, certainly in the time he’s been at Goodison, where he suggests to me that he could command the centre forward or the striker position at Goodison – I don’t think he could. I think he’d be a squad player.”
“Tosun joined the Toffees from Besiktas during the backend of the previous campaign “ and he made a strong impression with five goals from 14 league appearances. However,“ he has not been “ able to replicate the feat with the Merseysiders this term but hopefully, he can find form before Silva begins mulling over a probable replacement.
Other than this, Everton can bank on the services of Richarlison after the Brazilian completed his three-year suspension and this should better their prowess upfront with the attacker having already contributed three goals from as many matches. Richarlison made his debut for Brazil during the international break where he scored a brace against El Salvador.
