Ashley Williams angry at himself following Chelsea defeat

Everton centre-back Ashley Williams has admitted that he is angry with himself after failing to score a late leader in his side's defeat at Chelsea.

The Welshman glanced a close-range header into the roof of the net, and this prevented the Toffees from finding a way back into a game which they lost by a 2-0 scoreline.

He said: "We had chances to get it back to 2-1 – if I had scored that header, then we might have got another one. My shot was just a bit of a hit and hope. But the header I should definitely have scored, I don’t know how I didn’t. I tried to get contact on the ball but it went wide. That frustrated me because if we had got a goal then it would have been an interesting end to the game."

Ronald Koeman's side had a hectic week which involved three games in the space of just a week, but Williams does not consider this as a form of excuse for the club's lacklustre showing at Stamford Bridge. The Toffees failed to register an effort on target during the course of the game, and this eventually saw them suffer their first defeat of the new league campaign.

Williams' next duty will be with Wales at the World Cup qualifiers where they face must win games against Austria and Georgia. The Euro 2016 semi-finalists are already four points adrift of both Ireland and Serbia, and they will have to secure victories in their final four outings in order to stand any chance of reaching their first World Cup since 1958.One positive would be the return to Gareth Bale, who was suspended for the key outing versus Serbia last time around.

Williams has also tackled the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea during the initial phase of the new season, and things don't get easier following the international break with games versus Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta United and Manchester United.
