Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson Ruled Out With A Knee Injury

Everton will have to cope without the services of Gylfi Sigurdsson for a minimum of six weeks after he sustained a knee injury during the Toffees’ 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. The Iceland international sustained the problem during the game, but he managed to compete the entire 90 minutes after taking treatment from the club’s medical staff.
Shortly after the game, reports from Iceland claimed that the midfielder had suffered a severe knee problem which could see him miss the summer World Cup finals in Russia, but Everton have seemingly dismissed this situation, by citing that he could return to action before the end of the season.
A statement on the club’s official website read: "Following consultation with a specialist, it is anticipated that Gylfi Sigurdsson's knee injury, sustained in Saturday's Premier League win over Brighton, will keep him sidelined for between six and eight weeks. We'll continue to assess Gylfi's progress on a week-to-week basis and the medical team will work very closely with him, as they would with any injured player, to get him back playing as quickly as possible."
Sigurdsson joined the Toffees on a club-record fee from Swansea City during last summer’s transfer window, and he struggled to find his feet initially as the club lingered around the relegation positions. This enforced the club into a managerial change which saw Sam Allardyce replace Ronald Koeman at the helm and under the Englishman, the midfielder has shone, contributing four goals and a further three assists in the top-flight.
Despite talk of Sigurdsson returning in May, Everton may probably not rush the player, given he has a key commitment with the Iceland national side, who will be featuring in their first-ever World Cup finals in Russia later this year. The ex-Swansea man was crucial towards their progress to the quarter-final stage of Euro 2016, and he will now have the task of getting the nation out of their World Cup group.
